WHATS THE USE BETWEEN DEATH AND GLORY?

nobody told me abt this song.
i hate them.
because its too damn good.

give this man a medal.
fucking victorias cross or something

BABYSHAMBLES
mp3: "FUCK FOREVER"

VIDEO:

its one and the same, one and the same oh,
So whats the use between death and glory?
How can you choose between death and glory?
Happy endings, no, they never bored me
Happy endings, they still don't bore me
But they, they have a way
They have a way to make you pay
And to make you toe the line
Sever the ties
Because I'm so clever
But clever ain't wise

Fuck forever
If you don't mind
Oh fuck forever?
If you dont mind, dont mind,i dont mind,i dont mind

Oh whats the use between death and glory?
I cant tell between death and glory?
New labour and Tory
Purgatory and no happy families

Its one and the same, one and the same
No, its not the same
Its not supposed to be the same
You know about that way
The way they make you pay
And the way they make you toe the line
I've severed my ties
Oh, you're so clever, you're so clever
But you're not very nice
So fuck forever
If you don't mind
Oh I'm stuck forever
In your mind, your mind, your mind

But have you heard about that way,
To make you feel I should soon make you pay
And to make you toe the line, line
I Sever my ties
Oh well i never
Sever the ties
And fuck forever
If you don't mind
See i'm stuck forever
Oh i'm stuck in your mind, your mind, your mind

I never played this on the radio
Oh they never played this on the radio.

im just searchin for the next anthemic cinematic 80's influenced disco track, yall.

AGAIN & AGAIN

sometimes i feel like music loses touch with itself.
for instance,
take the band underoath.
i had a conversation with this kid at my college today about how
they were his favorite band and that they were original and the only band
doing what they are right now.
i said they sucked.
he got offended.
i then proceeded to show him how the fact that they were his favorite band didnt really
matter to me, but the fact that he thought they were original/idiosyncratic in modern
music was intensely disturbing to me.
he babbled about something that vaguely sounded like a defense of their merits.
he said things like "the drummer sings, who does that" and "the singer carries the beat".
dont get me wrong this kid is not stupid, despite all appearances to the contrary.
please watch as much of this as you can
i know its hard.
i know.

how can you claim a band like that to be original. at all?
really?
he eventually admitted that since all he listens to is "hardcore" (which he doesnt,
he didn't even know who black flag were) he was biased towards what was good and what wasnt.
all of this is an extremely long way to say, that
i saw Queens of The Stone Age's video for "Make It Wit Chu" today.
man is that catchy shit.
i mean seriously the band who churns out devilish sludge heavies can
make a toe tapper like this?
thats talent.
recycled screaming with electronic elements is not.

ive just been playin sum LAZRtag...

Remember when lasertag was coolbeans yall?
ppl would have sum parties and all theyd do is play sum lasertag.
but then the airsofts took over and nobody wanted to pay out the ass for lasers anymore.
Xcuse me, but i think with the trends n neon and electro someone would
bring it back.
we can only dream, yall.

nEways...ive been away for awhile, gathering valuable info on my life and times so i
can be a more informed human after all...speaking of, whatever happend to kanye west
and the daft punks band? i heard that on the side teh daft punks are creating films that dont have words.

but srsly yall, what is wrong with music today?
i feel like the blogs are getting lazy abt what they post...any old remix seems to do.
and sum electro bands like The Justice Brothers get wayyyyy too much credit for sum
shitty rmxs.
but while i was on my travels i came across two young lads from the hollywood hills, and they were all like "Electro? we can do that..." and then right before my very eyes they co-produced a sillie little track called "Detonate". "This will solve all your problems" they said, "you can feel the love". I was all like "No way. This is not the justice brothers i hate electro". but then i put it on my new iPhone 3G and was all like "No way. I am a sillie bigot for not likin this earlier".

srsly yall. this gives me hope. it shows me that nE1 can make sum "banger electro" and get famous on the blogospheres without any gimmicks...
so id like to give a very speshal welcome to one of my new favs:

LAZRtag!

they do alot of rmxs which turn popular song into bangers that nE old dj
can drop in a set and make his mainstreamer friends worship the ground he
walks on. You can download them at their myspaces.
heres an original that i like mostly:

mp3: "Detonate"

in other banger news, Ocelot did a rlly repetative rmx of The Muses smash hit "Nights At the Cydonia". Yet once again, laptop djs will want to have wild sex with this:

mp3: "Knights of Cydonia (Ocelot Remix)"

I have also decided something.
After one of teh daft punks made DJ medhi's song "Signatune" into a global phenomenon,
i was skeptical of how good DJ medhi really was/is/can be. In the end, i decided that sum DJ's are only good because their songs can get rmxed.
DJ medhi is one of them.
this is a rmx sum sillie group called "Chewy Chocolate Cookies" did for DJ Medick:

mp3:"Saharian Break (Chewy Chocolate Cookies Remix)"

well thats all for now yall.
do you think i should post more/less/never?
should i post more social commentary/electro?
is kanye west even black/a rapper?
is lil wayne ghey/a rapper?
is a milli even rap/a song?
just some questions i cant keep inside.

remember, its never too late to choose yer own adventure, yall.

stay beautiful <3

plz listen...sorry it isnt electrohash

why is it always the electro posts that have the most downloads?
im beginning to despair about the fate of the music blog in general.
we should pay more attn to meaningful indie musics that soothe
souls like:

PAGE FRANCE

i hasnt heard a band this fun in a long long long time.
theyre just fun to listen to.
fun fun fun.
most blogs described page france as a mix between neutral milk hotel and bright eyes, but i dont think they are correct. it doesnt have anything to do with nmh and even less to do with that fucking fggt conner OHburst.
fggts.

heres some music to help ease the pain of electrohash blogs

mp3: "Chariot"
mp3: "Jesus"

(from Hello, Dear Wind )
(which is a fggt name 4 an excellent album)
(come to think of it most albums have fggt titles...im looking at u U2)

should the music blogs go on strike until the electro war is over?
is HRO the greatest blog of all time?
is HRO the best/worst influence on the internet/me?
should all electro be posted on one blog such as discobelle/gvb to avoid confusion/give other music a chance?

do you like M83?

mp3: "Kim & Jessie"

i like M83. he looks kute/interesting/meaningful/starbuq date

does he look like he should be a dj such as diplo/girl talk/tiesto?
should he begin making mashups/itunes contest remixes?
when can he be #1 on hype machines?
can i be #1 on hype machines?

It RLY could happun...

this band/song does not get the credit they are rightfully due.
and it is a terrible terrible shame.
blur has been one of the most influential bands in my entire life...i
remember taking a trip to california to visit my grandpa and driving through
san diego and LA and san fransico with the parklife, self-titled, and 13 albums on
repeat in my cd player.

it seemed that damon albarn had a real grip on what mattered and could say what
i was feeling.
and i still feel.

i recently rediscovered the video for "the universal" and i had forgotten how
absolutely fantastic and unbelievable it really is.
and the song...well, take a listen and a view for yourself:

that texas town...at home on la grange

I just thought I'd give this song another shot at the light.

mp3: "La Grange"

Taken from ZZ Top's blues classic album Tres Hombres
"La Grange" is one of the best blues songs ever written...by white men.
From Texas.

The reason the song succeeds so well is because of its ability to conjure up
a visual image. From the first measure of the "doo doo doo doo doo dee doo" riff,
provided by the genius of Billy Gibbons by way of John Lee Hooker and Lightnin' Hopkins,
you feel as if a stranger just rode into town...into La Grange. The click-clack of the rims reminds me of a horse clattering down a dirt rode...then POW! The drums burst in and it seems that somethin's about to go down, maybe a gunfight or a brawl.

Then the key change jumps in and Billy's drunken six shooter guitar takes over the rest
of the work, rolling in and out of musical valleys, seemingly coming from nowhere to blast
you with another pass up and down the neck of the guitar...you've heard it before, but not like this. The fight is going down in the shack...

"La Grange" is one of those songs that you want to keep going on and on.
The lyrics are sparse for good reason, as Billy's guitar does the rest of the storytellin'.
The things he says at the beginning are just set up for the tale he's about to tell.

Rumour spreadin' a-'round in that Texas town
'bout that shack outside La Grange
and you know what I'm talkin' about.
Just let me know if you wanna go
to that home out on the range.
They gotta lotta nice girls ah.

Have mercy.
A haw, haw, haw, haw, a haw.
A haw, haw, haw.

Well, I hear it's fine if you got the time
and the ten to get yourself in.
A hmm, hmm.
And I hear it's tight most ev'ry night,
but now I might be mistaken.
hmm, hmm, hmm.

Ah have mercy!

This a song that kids should listen to before they can walk.
Too bad ZZ Top had to go and stop making blues music to get a bit o' money.

We Drink Ritalin

I love ATDI
much more than the Mars Volta.

this is why.

The genius that did this deserves, at minimum, a Nobel peace price or something like that shit.

Foals

I just saw this today and it blew me away
The foals stand there and bray
like battles on a hot summers day

Foals: "Red Sox Pugie" Live On Later...With Jools Holland

It is so much better than the album version of the song that I thought about not even posting the song.
Somehow it seems an insult that there is not a recorded version of the live take.

Esau Mwamwaya

This is about as cool as you can get...I love this guy.

Theres not much way to listen to him
other than his Myspace page, but its worth a toodle on over there.
For me (I love indigenous African music), this is about as heavenly as you can get.
And he's English.
Listen as Africa meets the west:

This is Esau singing the famous (or infamous) "Paper Planes"...Give it a listen. Srsly.

mp3: "Tengazako"

And this a demo from his 7" with Fader
Highest Recommendation.

mp3: "Chalo"

I want more.
Vampire Weekend who?

Shiller

Those Ratatatian songsmiths are doing some things....BEHIND OUR BACKS!
Ratatat has a new album, titled "LP3" coming out on July 8th.
And here is the first single:

mp3: "Shiller"

Apparently they also got another song out that is a b-side from "their fourth album"???????
Don't ask. Go to the pitchforks.
Also, I don't know if I like the fact that there is no beat in "Shiller". I kept waiting for that sick familiar hip hop jam to break in...I mean all the song does is build...and nothing. Oh well. I can't wait for the album anyway.
To whet thy appetite,
Here is a newish remix of "You Kept Me Waiting To Long" by the Television Personalities from E*Vax. It counts a Ratatat Remix.
This one comes with my highest recommendation.
Srsly.

Fleet Foxes

Every once in a while, a band comes along and your all like:

"I've heard this befo...but I haven't...It's so original and retro... BRAIN ASPLOSION!!!"

Well, thats Fleet Foxes. This band is genius. They have the harmony of Crosby, Stills, and Nash,
with the pop sensibilities to match. Lead singer man Robin Pecknold is riveting with his warbly half falsetto, and the band never overpowers him or the harmonies or the message, a rare thing these days. I've been absolutely in love with their Sun Giant EP for about three days. It is literally on repeat.

I feel Fleet Foxes is going to be a big deal to a lot of people someday. Hopefully the Seattle, Washington natives will make the trek to Dallas so I can partake in the glory. Its kinda funny how you really get transported into a very different time of life when you listen to Fleet Foxes. Certainly, as has been pointed out before, they have much in common with Denton heroes Midlake (whom I have adored since my youth). At a single chord they can conjure up a story you feel you've heard a thousand times, a fable of your childhood that you haven't heard in ages. And so it is that Fleet Foxes gets my highest recommendation.

Look out on the horizon for their new album, tentatively scheduled for release on Sub-Pop on June 3rd.
Keep yo fingas crossed.

Take a gander through the backwoods of the Northwest:

From the Sun Giant EP
mp3: "Mykonos"
mp3: "English House"

From their as-yet-untitled LP release:
mp3: "White Winter Hymnal"

lyrics to "White Winter Hymnal":

I was following the pack
all swallowed in their coats
with scarves of red tied ’round their throats
to keep their little heads
from fallin’ in the snow
And I turned ’round and there you go
And, Michael, you would fall
and turn the white snow red as strawberries
in the summertime..

Sometimes there is beauty within simplicity.

I have found a reason to post about DFA 1979, thus making it a Very, Very, Very Good Day, Also because MSTRKRFT has like 3 new remixes and are awesome

Death From Above 1979 could have been the greatest band ever.
As it stands, they are number four on my list o' greatest ever.

There is a small and very finite amount of DFA 1979 material. Which is saddening. But,
by chance I found what apparently is a Demo version of "Romantic Rights"! I've listened to this song so many times the incongruence between this and the album version seem much larger than they really are but nevertheless...

Listen to this:

mp3: "Romantic Rights (Unknown Demo Version)"

weird, huh?
It's like maybe it's the master track before they put the crazy effects on JFK's bass at the beginning. And it ends differently with that stutter of Sebastien's voice...I did some research on where this came from, and found nothing.
Maybe I'm the only one in the world that has this. I found it on megaupload, and it didn't have that tag on it, it just said "Romantic Rights".

In other related awesome, I found this pretty sweet-ace mash up
of "Romantic Rights" and Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" by British mash-up crazy-man Dave Remix:

mp3: "Romantic Criminal (Dave Remix's DFA 1979 vs. Michael Jackson Edit)"

MSTRKRFT decided that they do work now,
and have put out a slew of things for your enjoyment...
Find them at Panda Toes!

R.I.P DFA 1979.
I still miss you.

OH K

I honestly just kinda stumbled across this.
Shitdisco has been around for a bit now, and I had like...two, three of their songs.
But after (actually before I even finished) watching this video I was downloading Kingdom of Fear as fast as my poor connection would let me...I lava it.

We Goin' Ovaseas With This...Ovaseas?

MSTRKRFT.

I saw them about 3 weeks ago at the Palladium Loft and they were massive. They dropped this new song "Bounce" at that show, and no-one knew what it was...I just remember everybody burning up the dancefloor and immediately catching the club-ready hook "All I do is Party...HAHAHAHA". I imagine that every single DJ in the world will play this song at least once in their lives.

I'm not going to make a pronouncement on it quite yet...cos I think its kinda generic. But its the KRFT, what you gonna do about it? Nuthin'.

mp3: "Bounce (Feat. N.O.R.E)"

Evidently N.O.R.E is quite sure this track will conquer our neighbours across the waves.
Good luck with that.

Quiet Village...Just Blowin' Minds Left 'n Right

I don't understand this. As I listen to what precious little I have of Quiet Village, I am reminded that music has no limits. It truly can open gates of understanding that are previously kept hidden. GorillavsBear pointed me to this, and for that, my greatest thanks.
What is Quiet Village, you may ask?
Well, the straight answer is: I don't know.

As far as I can gather, they are a "DJ" (I use that term loosely) Duo from the United Kingdom who make lo-fi-dub-world-trance-hip-hop-genre-mind-bending music.
Honestly, to describe the otherworldy sound of Quiet Village is a mammoth task equivalent to explicating the Hopelandic lyrics to Sigur Ros' ().
Which is what I first thought of when I heard Quiet Village. Imagine Sigur Ros in dubstep form with samples. Their ability to conjure up pictures with sound is equatable. But in truth, I'll let the musics do the talkings:

These are tracks I scrounged from their upcoming
Debut LP Silent Movie:

mp3: "Free Rider"
mp3: "Pacific Rhythm"

You also MUST hear the song "Pillow Talk" on their myspace.
If I rated my musical selections, this would garner my highest accolade possible.
I really am excited beyond reason for this LP.

Madsen

I know nothing about this band because they speak German...WIKAPEDIA COME TO ME!!!!
Ah, info.

Madsen is a German rock band that hails from Priesseck, a section of Clenze in the Wendland. Three of the members are brothers with the surname Madsen, hence the band's name.

Their music combines elements of Pop, Rock, and Punk together with lyrics in German. They released their debut album in 2005 and reached #23 on the German music charts.

All that is to say...This video for their song "Goodbye Logik" is just the catchiest thing I've heard in a long long long long long long time.
I sing the chorus to myself.
I sound stupid.
The chorus in German is:

"Goodbye Logik
Alles kommt anders als geplant
Goodbye Logik
Mein Herz besiegt meinen Verstand
Goodbye Logik
Es ist nichts mehr wie es war
Goodbye Logik
Mein Herz besiegt meinen Verstand "

-which in turn translates ruffly to........WAIT! THERES NO ENGLISH TRANSLATION?????
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well.
I love it love it love it.
No mp3 though, working on it.

Heres the video:

Madsen: "Goodbye Logik"

Keep up the fight, Madsen.
You'll be regular Rammsteins yet.

------------------------------------------

UPDATE!!!
I think that the line
"Mein Herz besiegt meinen Verstand"
Actually means something like:
"My Heart attacks (maybe destroys???) my mind"

Thank you Rammstein and Tele, for pouring useless German into my brain.
If anybody that reads this figures the chorus out,
comment on it.

That is all.

-------------------------------------------

UPDATE NUMERO DOS!!!

After searching for the CD for about a day and a half....joy.
I have found it.
Which means free mp3's fo youse guyse.

Here's Me Favoritas:

mp3: "Goodbye Logik"
mp3: "Du Schreibst Geschichte"
mp3: "Ein Sturm"

I love stuff like this...

Black Kids Get RRREMIXED

This is just fun fun fun.
I love the Black Kids and their little four-song EP that they put out,
but they need to get a move on in the full LP department. So I they just
kind of fell of the ol' radar for a little while. But now come the sweetness...
The Twelves remixed "I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You".

Behold! DISCO COMETH TO THE BLACK KIDS!
I love this. It makes me wonder why people dont do this more often...the sugary
synth, the trippy vocal, the stomp yo feetz and clap yo handz beatz...great.

mp3: "I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You (Twelves Remix)"

Just breathe in, breathe out, and DANCE DANCE DANCE!

SHAZAM!!!

"PEACE LOVE ECTASY UNITY RESPECT".
This kid is the real deal. Apparently some of the hipsters have been drooling over this seventeen year old's ability to destroy things with his laptop capabilities. Sign me up.

His remix of Muscles...wait hold on. Can I be the first person on the BLOGOSPHERE to say that I abhore Muscles? I think he's pretentious unoriginal dribble. And it baffles me as to why everybody jumped in his boat so muthafuzukin quick.
Anyway, SHAZAM the boy wonder redid Muscles rediculously sub-par track "Sweaty". And how.

This thing starts out like a glitch-banger, and I'm like "Oh darn, this is going to be pretty run of the millz" but.....then the the smooth vocal comes on over and sets up something, but he doesn't reveal anything special yet. THEN BOOM! He drops a funkadelic dance number on our unsuspecting heads and suddenly we all be dancin'!!! It just gets better. I was getting real depressed about the state of electronic music until I heard this. Now we're getting somewheres.

Muscles "Sweaty (SHAZAM Remix)"
head on over to DISCODUST for an exclusive track...its worth the trip.

Justice:datA

This is absurd good.
Thought I might bring it to attension after languishing for about a half year.
Ya know why?
BECAUSE....
Apparently JUSTICE is mixing this shiz into their sets and basically killing people right there on the dancefloor with handmade handguns. IN THA MUTHAFUZUKIN PUBLIC. I got wind that they mixed "Minuit Jacuzzi" with "Phantom pt. II" in NYC and murdered everything in the surrounding area. Like it was Cloverfield.
So, I am preparing my will for when I see the Parize Boyze in Dallas on March 4.
And I don't even care.

Oh and I have no idea who DatA is.
But he (or she, or they, or it) must be the most awesome thing with a laptop ever.

Today I would like to pay homage in video form to two of the greatest charecters

They are Mooninites, an advanced civilization that has 5...thousand dimmensions.

YAWA'S Videos That Changed (My) Earth: Top 5

Well, this one was a toughie to place.
----------------------------------------
Top 5:
5. Daft Punk: Around the World
4. Naughty By Nature: Hip Hop Hooray
3. System Of a Down: Chop Suey!

System of a Down has long been blown off and relegated to the band dumping ground known as "Nu-Metal". They have been maligned for their attempts at having a social and political conscience and slammed for their lack of origianlity with the whole Mesmerize/Hypnotize fiasco. They are now on haitus and lead singer Serj Tankian is making terrible solo music.

Yet what they did for metal, and music in general, on the landmark album Toxicity was incomprable.
Every song on it was, and is, a metal classic.
But what topped them all, especially for me at the tender age of 12, was the barnstormer of a single: "Chop Suey!" It was like my brain hit a gigantic brick wall of awesome. It was anti-everything-I-had-ever-learned. IT WAS LOUD.

And the video was, well lets just say "IT WAS".
I remember driving to Colorado to go skiing with another family and my friend had the video (which he had gotten off KAAZA) on his computer. I swear to God we watched that thing about a bazillion gazillion times on that 14 hour drive. No exaggeration. I had every movement they did memorized. I think we did an choregraphed impersonation of it in our hotel room too. I love this song, and that is why...

YAWA'S Videos That Changed (My) Earth: Top 5

Sorry for the lack of postage here, but yours truly has been most busy these last couple weeks. I need to get another writer....
Anyway, I be back and am lampin' with more from the land of videos that changed my life.

----------------------------------

Top 5:
5. Daft Punk: Around the World
4. Naughty By Nature: Hip Hop Hooray

This is probably one of the greatest hip hop songs ever recorded. Everything about it is perfect: the rising baseline, the swagger of the switched up vocals and a sing along chorus that you get stuck in your head. I wager that even those who aren't in tune with hip hop or even Naughty by Nature will be down with song. And the video, well lets just say it's the hallmark of hip hop videos. It has that all important element of self-mockery which must go with truly awesome "gangsta" rap. The video oozes cool from every bass thump, you want to be them, you want this jam to be yours. But its not, and they flaunt it in your face. IT'S THIER JAM. IT'S HIP HOP HOORAY!

Hallelujah! Etc. Etc.

Newsflash:

Amy Winehouse isn't coming to the Grammy's cos she's a brat and doesn't have a visa.

The exchange between America and Amy went a bit like this:

Amy: I jus wanna get...(vomits)...in...(vomits)...countries...(vomits)...
U...(vomits)...S...(trails off into incoherent babble...)
America: You suck.
Amy: Wha...(vomits)....(collapses)
America: Screw you, and screw your Visa.

(Pause...America looks at passed out Amy)

America: I hate this stupid girl and her stupid "retro" fag music.

(Suddenly Britain enters the room with annoying Arctic Monkey's music blaring on its iPod)

Britain: Amy! WE LOVE YOU OH SO MUCH!

America: (disgusted) This sucks, we're leaving. (To itself) Barak or Hillary? Barak or Hillary?....
(leaves)
Amy: (Arising from her stupor) Gonna...(vomits)...take...(vomits)....me back to...(vomits)...rehabzzzzzzzzz....(falls into coma, from which she never wakes up. There is much rejoicing).

THE END.

YAWA's Videos That Changed (My) Earth: Top 5

Because it'll take too long, I'm just going to run the videos in a post each so I can get this done.
Coming in at number 5, the magnificent, the fantastic, the robotic...DAFT PUNK!

"Around the World" is not Daft Punk's best song. The Frenchies have much better songs in their repertoire, but not a better video. It is the textbook on syncopation and lighting choreography. It has been copied for the last ten years in almost every trance, dance and even rock video made.

Director Michel Gondry gave the song lifeblood. Literally each part of the song is represented by a dancing quartet: the bass by super-tall humans, the spry glissandos by synchronized swimmers, the vocoderized "around the world" by robots, etc. As the melodies progress, each group's performance evolves.

The setting is a black studio with a colorful backdrop that ascribes to the scene the look of a living jukebox, with dancers forming a universal groove. At the climax of the song, the camera views the scene from above, revealing that the dance is being performed on a record. The song fades out, and so do the lights as the "jukebox" turns off.

So get up and dance to "Around the World"

Atlas: The Singer Is a Crook!

Finally, I know what Tyondai Braxton is saying in Battles' classic "Atlas".
The lyrics are as follows:

"People won't be people when they hear this sound
That's been glowing in the dark at the edge of town
People won't be people, no
The people won't be people when they hear this sound
Won't you show me what begins at the edge of town

The singer is a crook
The singer is a crook
The singer is a crook
The singer is a crook
The kitchen is the cook
The scissors are the barbers
The singer is a crook
The chorus, full of actors*"

*on the last chorus, they say "The Chorus Doesn't Matter"

Thanks to Drowned in Sound for pulling this out of 'em.
Now I can sing along for reals!

U2-3D: A Review

I just got back from seeing U2-3D at the local IMAX here in Dallas, and I can't help but feel that I have witnessed history. I am not one of those ecstatic U2 fans who worship everything they do and say, think Bono is the God and Edge the Son of God, but as I left the theater, I couldn't stop singing "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own".
First, let me say that if you can make it to an IMAX anywhere that is showing it, GO. NOW.
Second, I must say a few words about the power of this movie (or concert film, or whatever), and why it will take its place as one of the great rock films of all time.

How long will we sing the praises of U2? They seem to just keep getting better and better. It was said that they would fade after 2004's How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. It was said that they were simply trying to find a new audience instead of continuing to progress musically. It was said...but it is no more said. This film has put to rest (for awhile at least) U2's daemons of progress. They have found a way to re-invent a medium and propel their genius all in one fell swoop.

It is not simply that they have re-established themselves as the "most popular band in the world", but that they have created a film which in itself is simply unbelievable. The opening sequence of "Vertigo"and "Beautiful Day" played back to back in front of 80,000 screaming Buenos Aires fans is one of the most powerful things I have ever seen on screen, ranking up there with this year's magical Heima documentary by Sigur Ros.

The true power of course lies in Bono's ability to draw you in and capture you in a feeling of enchantment, of pure exhilaration, or weightlessness, while The Edge, Larry Mullen Jr., and Adam Clayton cement your entry into their otherworld. With the spectacular 3D effects, the draw to the stage is intensified to almost unbearable proportions. You want to be there, you want to feel it...then you realize that you are feeling it, right there in your seat. In the immediacy of lies its greatest triumph. You do not feel you are there, you are there.

The only flaw of the film is in its failure to include some of the absolute cannon songs of the U2 catalog. There is no "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", no "40", no "Mysterious Ways", no "Desire", no "Walk On", no "Elevation". It is difficult to overlook some of these omissions, yet it does no real harm to the film as a whole or the visual experience, which is the focal point of the entire project.

The visual experience is truly stunning in the highest degree. It is indescribable to those haven't seen it, as it is with those who have.
Bono's hands, literally reaching out to you,
the sweat of the electric crowd flying up in your face,
Adam Clayton's trademark strut right into your lap,
Larry Mullen Jr.'s pulsating drums sparkling in the stage lights,
The Edge's guitar neck bursting through the screen,
the massive backdrop of colors and lights overwhelming your eyes and the music assaulting your ears.
They have gone, with you in tow, as producer Catherine Owen's remarked, "somewhere magical".

In conclusion, I have to say that the experience from this exquisite film is unlike anything I've ever been a part of in a theater. The songs of U2 burst to life in color and light in ways that were beforenow unimaginable.
And that is why I give U2-3D a:

10 out of 10.

Blog Fight!!! (or, Vampire Weekend, or How I Got Confused)

Blog Fight!!! Brooklyn's Vampire Weekend's eponymous new album has caused a firestorm of content and discontent and other kinds of tents all over the BLOGOSPHERE.
A sampling of the feelings:
(Click Links for Full Reviews)

Pitchfork: "8.8 out of 10"
Underground Online: "A"
Rolling Stone: "3 1/2 Stars"
Newsday: "B+"
PrefixMag.Com: "8.0 out of 10"

The hubbub has been mostly positive, and it looks as if we have found the Indie saviors of the year...maybe.

I will post my review of it today or tomorrow, or maybe just sometime in the near future. I was going to review it today, but I realized that I had downloaded, instead of the album, some sort of song collection in the form of the album with the song "Boston" replacing "M79", as well as "I Stand Corrected" not being there at all.
I realized the mistake after a friend pointed out the tracklisting on their website.
The thing is, I have absolutely no idea what "Boston" is from. I love the song so much and wish it was on the regular album, so I'm going to post it here for all to enjoy. If you know what it's from, feel free to comment on my ignorance.

Video: Metronomy's "Radio Ladio"

I just adore this video.
Just came out about a week and a half-ago.
They keep getting better and better.

mp3: "Radio Ladio"

Diamond Hoo Ha Man: Good Lord.

In America, bands from other countries either get passed over like the Israelites, destroyed like Sodom and Gomorrah, or are worshiped zealously like Baal. Sadly Supergrass is one of the Israelites.
Passed over in the U.S., Supergrass have labored in quiet popularity in their native Britain, making fabulous records and blowing minds across the globe.
Now they return with the first single from their follow-up to 2005's excellent Road To Rouen, called "Diamond Hoo Ha Man".
And boy, is it a single.
This is quite furious for them, but I love it.
Tiny Mixtapes does too...There is definitely some hype coming from the machine.

Diamond Hoo Ha Man--mp3
(from Diamond Hoo Ha, to be released 4/15/08)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The music video for the song, posted last week, bears this description:
"To spare your confusion - the fabulous Diamond Hoo Ha Men are covering for the band in the video, as Supergrass were not available for the shoot. Enjoy!"

Speculation is that the Diamond Hoo Ha Men are simply Gaz and Rob Coombes, the brothers that front Supergrass. Wouldn't surprise me. Not one bit.

YAWA's Videos That Changed (My) Earth: The Runners Up

I decided, in the same vein as VH1's 10 Videos That Rocked The World, that I would undertake a similar venture. Only these are ones that I've seen in my lifetime, and none of them are from before I was born (1989). And they're better than VH1's list.
There will be a top five and 3 Runners up.
Today we focus on the runners-up.

-------------------------------------------

Runner Up #3:
First up, we have Beck's iconic "Devil's Haircut" video. It's hard to choose one Beck video, because their all awesome in some way, but this is the first one I ever saw, and let me tell you, I hadn't seen a thing like it. The pure cool and swagger as he jaunts down the streets, the stop-and-stare zoom, and the odd ending combine for true Beck experience. As Odelay went on to change Beck's status from one-hit wonder to musical wonderboy, this video (along with "Where It's At") did much to change his image as well.

Beck: "Devil's Haircut"

Runner Up #2:

Next we have Gorillaz's earth shattering video for their 2001 ultra-smash "Clint Eastwood". To be fair, the video is neither something magnificent or brilliant. But nobody had ever done anything like this: the total stripping of human personality from a band and replacing it with made-up (or some would say fake) characters to do their singin' an dancin' for them...plus having a complex background story for each to boot. And here's the kicker: Everybody (and I mean just about everybody) liked it. Gorillaz will forever be on the map for this one.

Gorillaz: "Clint Eastwood"

Runner Up #1:

There's not much I can say to describe the beauty and power...and oddity of The Flaming Lips' classic "Do You Realize??". Honestly, this was such a close runner-up to the top 5. Like personal agony close. But my top 5 should justify the absence of this video.
Enjoy the Rabbits, Elephants, and weird girls:

The Flaming Lips: "Do You Realize??"

Tomorrow (Time Permitting):
The Top 5!

Album Review #1: Bedlam In Goliath

There was a time, long ago, when there was a prog rock band set to change the world. They had the earth in their hands, and everybody eagerly awaited the follow-up to their ear shattering debut. Behold, the album came, and the general reaction was...well...a bit like this: "okay, this is it?"

Yet hope still remained, and after several years off, this band was poised to strike again with a new album, rumored to be better than the rest...and the general reaction was...a bit like..."what. what the hell."

That band of course was, and unfortunately is, The Mars Volta.
I used to be a fan. I mean, when I got Deloused in the Comatorium I was floored. Then came the Tremulant EP and I was yet again, floored. I couldn't wait for Frances the Mute.
Disappointment.
Despair.
Despond.

But this review (my first) is not about that album, or Amputechture, the un-musical album that they made last year.

It is about Bedlam in Goliath, today's release.
I popped this album in, waiting, just hoping for something intelligible to come out of my speakers, something brilliant.
And....
Nope.
Not going to happen.

From the very beginning, guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez intrudes into any and all space he finds in the record with his idiotic noodling and off key solos, making it sound absolutely horrendous. Cedric Bixler-Zavala yells and chortles himself into oblivion, once again singing about absolutely nothing at all. Give it up, Voltaheads. The "It's a concept" thing isn't working here. And the back-up band, which used to give such a flair and finish to their earliest work, seems to just follow Omar's lead and just noodle and off-key each other, like their one upping themselves on how bad an 8-piece can sound.

The bright spots only truly come when Omar stops playing (which is like, never), and, more specifically, in one song: "Goliath". In a rare return to good songwriting, TMV crafts a real gem here, and honestly, the only song worthy of listening to on the album. "Goliath" captures the speed and immediacy of their earlier days, burning a hole in the speakers and leaving us ready for more.

But it never comes.
The rest of the album is absolutely worthless.
And that's where I think The Mars Volta has hit the proverbial wall. As a friend of mine put it when I told him of Bedlam's imminent release: "Who gives a f***?". That is what TMV has done to itself, namely, noodling and off-keying themselves out of relevancy. They simply don't matter. I really DO NOT WANT TO LISTEN to this album. It feels like a damn chore. Singing about nothing and playing long flowing concept songs with the wonderful Latin fusion used to work for them, but now it just sounds like their not trying.
The problem is they are, and very hard.

And that is why,
Bedlam in Goliath receives a:

3.2 out of 10

Here's the only good song for your listening pleasure:
Goliath--mp3 (from Bedlam in Goliath)

I hope they break up.

OH MAH GAWD!

This is certainly unexpected.
New GNARLS BARKLEY, children!

The Song is called "Run"...but no word on the contents of the new album, although
Rolling Stone says they've heard it, but you know those jokers, I can never see em' straight.

I wont tell you what I think of the track just yet,
Listen to it.
One of four things will happen:

1. The ghost of pop will ask for his trousers back.
2. You will spend the entire song wondering why this doesn't sound like "Crazy".
3. The sugary pop goodness of the track will give you type 2 diabetes.
4. Danger Mouse will bust up in your room, produce an album, and leave like the shadows. The album will be hailed as a "modern masterpiece" by critics.

Gnarls Barkley--Run--mp3

This is a good thing.

Update:
Pitchfork, as always, has let us know about the album.
It's called The Odd Couple
I can't wait.
